Social Media and Surveillance

MM52 Archive

Article Summary:

The article is about the government trying to track people's online activity to prevent violent crimes from taking place. Students that were given laptops by the school, were having there camera's being used by teachers to view what pupils were doing at home.

Privacy- people, especially young people want to have private space. They want a place where they can do whatever they like to in the place they like to, without anyone snooping around spying on them. Generally, such place would be their bedroom, where they will disclose any private things with someone close to them (generally the same age as them). A psychologist stated that individuals change their personality and behaviour depending on the type of people they are around For example, if at work the behaviours would be professional and smart whereas with friends, it may be inappropriate/humorous. By having a Facebook account and a nearby family member adds you as a friend, the life sphere will be gone. This is because on one hand a youngster may use false language with friends, but very mature with parents. By such an event occurring shatters ones privacy, as that member can see their posts.

Data mining- Facebook users are worth about £1.73. These sites use a lot of advertising revenue in order to gain more revenue. They use a method known as data mining where they track most of your online movements and link up the potential interests that you (the user) hold.

The government, both the UK and USA use a surveillance method where they track data of millions of users who interact with the internet.

Critical autonomy:

In general, as a user I do care about my own privacy. I understand that such precautions need to be taken place in order to secure the general public, but it also challenges audiences ideologies of the government. They may think that the government is making a scheme of collecting data on certain individuals and can break trusts between society and the government. The idea of breaking into people's webcams is breaking the boundaries. If it were online tracking and nothing else, I would have little objection to it, but by breaking into webcams to see what people are up to is completely against the nations interest. It strips people off of their privacy and can break trust. People may not ever want to touch a computer again due to knowing this as its harms are far more significant and such harms can be privacy breaking.

New and Digital Media Introduction

Year 13: New and Digital Media

  • The change on different aspects of the media due to new technology:
News-

News is now in decline as technology has taken over the ways in which the public can find and interact with news. For example, phones now have the internet which is a secondary platform (the e-media) that news companies use in order to make their content reach to a wider audience. The internet is used by millions of users world wide and people interact with it a lot. New companies take advantage of this platform and put their content via the internet in order to gain views and interactivity from the potential consumers that they could have. Technology such as this makes it more convenient and cheaper for consumers to gain news coverage than compared to purchasing a news paper, which hardly anybody does now days.

Television-

T.V (also known as the broadcast platform) is slowly in decline along with the news/print platform as consumers (mostly the youngsters/teenagers) tend to interact more with online and computers and watch less T.V. The internet holds a lot of different types of content and sites in which youngsters can visit and it allows for a wide range of different content which the current T.V platforms doesn't offer. An example is, BBC Three which has recently gone off-air. It was a channel dedicated in attracting teenagers and an overall young audience base, but wasn't getting enough views and support and had to shut down. It has now moved online which proves that the online platform and technology has taken over and has proved itself worthy for a wider audience.

  • The termination or decline in industries or companies as a result of new technology:
An example of a famous thing that was negatively affected due to the changes in technology would be BBC Three (mentioned before). This is because the internet holds the majority of audiences and companies operating via print or broadcast are losing out and have a potential loss in terms of less views on their channel/papers.

Another impact on industries as a result of new technology would be the film industry. This is because the arrival of the internet also brings forth potential negative things such as piracy. Films that are recently put into cinemas face having their content being shown for free via the internet due to the pirate websites that allow users from around the world to view them free of charge. This attempt can cost the film industry millions as there would be less money being made as people will decide to watch it from home instead of spending £10 for a ticket.

The film A Field in England took a unique distribution strategy in order to prevent such attacks losses from occurring. It had published all its companies on all platforms (simultaneous release) including online, so that they can generate the potential revenue they would have made if they didn't publish it in the traditional method.

  • Influence on other aspects of society:
Politics-

The government argues that the internet is causing people especially youngsters to develop poor communication problems as they only are seen to interact via internet and not face to face. This can have a major impact as youngsters who go into work would have already well developed communication skills, by using the internet to communicate, the ability to talk to new people will add to issues and can have a major problem within the working world.

Education-

The arrival and introduction of new tech has had both a positive and negative effect on youngsters. This is because it allows news and information to be sent and received much quicker allowing for users to learn more quicker and more conveniently. However, it can keep people occupied for a long time which can allow them to postpone work that is vital for educational use. They seem to become addicted to the devices they use and seem to not stop using them.

Protest movements-

The introduction to new technology has allows protest movements to gain recognition and attention much more effectively and faster than compared to previously. This is due to social media which allows word to spread fast from one end of the spectrum to the other. Organisations that have an appeal for something can use social media to gain an audience and supporters and can quickly achieve what they need to do as they have been recognised much faster due to this new tech.
  • The impact of social media on users/people:
The new tech can have both a positive and a negative impact on users. This is because devices such as the Iphone that have touch screen help keep people in line with the current state of technology. Most businesses seek to find people who understand new tech and have a good understanding of such things. By interacting with them and using them as well as learning more about them can really help boost skills and knowledge as users can keep up with the current advances in tech along with the economy and society in general.

It can have a negative impact on users as they can become less sociable in the real world. People (mainly the youngsters) tend to use social media as a way of interaction with friends and family, but this can cause serious problems in future interactions as people will forget how to communicate effectively to a person face to face as they are too used to interacting via text/messages. This type of skill is required in society as people will always come across a new person whether it is at work or day to day shopping.

  • Promotion opportunities of the people:
The use of new technology comes with much more opportunities for people to promote themselves. An example would be YouTube. This is essentially an online site where people around the world submit videos of themselves or of something that will gain the interest of the public. It is sites like these that attract youngsters and is the platform which is dominating T.V. People can make a video of an important message or share something of their that is linked with their personal interest, and by uploading this content it will be available to a wide audience who can gain access to this content very quick.

New technology has aided people in trying to get themselves noticed by the public such as, through the world wide web and even the addition of social media and apps. These are new tech that didn't exist previously and each app contains special and unique feature that can help many individuals in promoting them self publicly. Tech advances tend to change to help benefit peoples preferences and this is what makes it useful and very powerful amongst society and amongst individuals.

Introduction to NDM

NDM Reading Task

1) Key aspects summary:

Page 10 summary-

The article is essentially a research programme where various people who are teachers etc. look for a pattern in young peoples lives when they interact with certain links and technology for example, social media. They have seen a pattern where the media can have an impact on the way people can learn as well as relate to other people especially their families. Examples include, site like YouTube allow for vlogging and people can present a very true self on screen. but different one in real life.

It also reveals that school and parents don't really care about the social uses of the media, but of the educational spectrum. Young people actually enjoys the company of non-judgemental adults, people who were interested in their actions and movements through the media.

Page 46 summary-

There is the introduction of a new app known as Periscope. This is an app that allows users (of Twitter and Periscope) to live stream anything they like. Their followers on both site (both Twitter and Periscope) can view the content that is being streamed. One major concern for the app and of online is that people have less privacy. They are have no privacy when is comes to streaming as people all over the world can view their content and this damages peoples rights to do whatever they like and to the people they like e.g. friends. Like all forms of technology and online advances, there comes a threat of crime such as bullying. This app can offer the chance for bullies to take advantage of such content and use it against the victim.

This app has had a major problem on piracy. Even though the main purpose of the app is to live stream films and content, users can manipulate its core feature for criminal uses such as piracy. Despite the negative side of this app, there is great potential in the world for an app like this. The app can help educationally as it can prevent absences from occurring. Those who are ill can stream to the app in order to gain the knowledge they need for that day. They may not be at school, but they are getting the knowledge and teaching that they previously wouldn't have received.

2) Reasons for the essay's success:

The essay begins to set the case study up, by developing on Spotify and the facts that help make its success. It helps give the reader a better understanding of the case study they they are about to read on. It gives a point that seems to be positive towards the case study, however it begins to argue against it, giving an alternative point of view. For example, the artists are ultimately the ones in power and audiences have little control. It argues for and against, giving both sides of the argument and persuades the reader to agree on the subject matter. By identifying both sides it creates a debate which is really crucial when essay writing. It keeps the reader engaged and makes them interact more with what they are reading.

In addition, it gives examples of other businesses and companies that operate in the same market for example, YouTube. Talking about how music streaming apps require wifi regardless of location and other businesses cannot counter this problem.Going into depth of the restrictions that audiences of Spotify have help, to further improve the argument; going again their mission statement. It talks about, how the audiences them self are the ones who shape and are continuously shape the media industry. Finally the use of own knowledge is key. By presenting an answer which goes further from the depths of the question but is still in link with it, can boost the strength of the essay as it gives not a limited amount of information.

3) How has digital media changed your life in the last 5 years (for positive or negative)?:

The media has had a rather positive impact on my life during the past five years, however as we progress through the years it evolves and becomes ever so different, making us (the consumers) want to do more. An example would be, introduction to Instagam or 4K T.V. It is these innovations that come out every few months and constantly gains our attention as it further improves our experience. However, over the years, the internet has become more addicting as YouTuber's and content creator are producing so much content that is occupies the audience. It can create a problem as it helps young people procrastinate and do less work. People would be so occupied with internet activity and media content, that work and the educational side of things become irreverent as it is done less.
